THE MATRIARCHS THAT MADE US
A photojournalism series by Brittany Bendabout
At birth, we descended from our mother --where our ancestral kinship is central to who we are. Many American and Canadian tribes are matrilineal. Meaning we descended from our mother’s clan, not our father’s clan. In a colonial, predominantly Euro-centric system we often see men in leadership-like roles. However, in matrilineal societies, women displayed authority, decision-making, and strong influence within their communities. Our mothers impact and inspire many facets of our lives. Our mothers are foundational to our being and the belonging in which we exist.
Our lives are shaped before us by the matriarchs that made us. This is for our mothers who have molded us, guided us, protected us, and prayed for us. We are you.
